Six veteran professionals who have worked with distinction in television for 25 years or more were honored at the Silver Circle Awards on Sunday night, May 4, 2008 at a formal, gala dinner and presentation at the world-famous Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami. Manny Alvarez, one of the hardest working photographers in South Florida television, joined the staff of WCIX in 1984, which later became WFOR-TV/CBS4. Carolyn Cefalo, recently retired as Professor of broadcast production in the School of Communication at the University of Miami, also is a former President of the Suncoast Chapter and the recipient of its highest honor, the Governor’s Award. Michele Gillen, a 25-time Emmy winner who has devoted most of her career to groundbreaking reports of local, national and international significance, won two more Emmys at the 2007 Suncoast Emmy Awards for her investigative report, “The Forgotten Floor”. Rafael Murciano, one of the most respected news videographers in South Florida, also is an award-winning producer of outstanding films that have been recognized at many national and international film festivals. Ileana Varela, who has devoted most of her career to reporting in South Florida, is a multiple Emmy winner who also has been honored with two Green Eyeshade Awards. Michael Williams, a reporter for WSVN, WTVJ, NBC News and now CBS4 in Miami, has won multiple Emmy Awards and is the co-recipient of the Alfred I. DuPont award. | The 2008 Silver Circle Awards blended the recognition of extraordinary past achievements by six outstanding veteran professionals with the presentation of Distinguished Suncoast Scholar plaques to seven extraordinary students of broadcasting from South Florida colleges and Universities who were awarded scholarships by the Suncoast Chapter and its Partners in Education, the television stations of South Florida, WBFS-TV/My 33, WFOR/CBS4, WLTV Univision 23, WPLG Local 10, WSCV Telemundo 51, WSVN/7 and NBC6/WTVJ. |
